During the afternoon of January 12, 2010 the city of Port au Prince, capital of the Caribbean island nation Haiti, and its population of 3 million was rocked by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake.
To date, more than 200,000 people perished with 30,000 commercial buildings and 225,000 residences collapsed or severely damaged. The city and surrounds was paralysed by shock and grief, and were without the basic infrastructures for 'doing life'.
RescueNet, a UN registered rapid response emergency relief unit, deployed a team of 10-12 responders from Australia, Holland and the US. The team consisted of professionally trained volunteer workers who offered medical, light search and rescue, fire suppression, and trauma counselling assistance to the people of Haiti.
Thank you for keeping the team in your thoughts and prayers in recent days as they provided emergency relief under the most difficult of circumstances.
The team has now returned to their countries of origin while on-going relief is continuing in Haiti. WRA would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have given so generously throughout this disaster.
